Hi, i went to Dom Rep several years ago and was very disappointed to have the Atlantic Sea, not the Carribean. We are going to go back at the beginning of next year but are finding it very difficult working out what has which sea!! Has anyone been to Bavaro? It is in the east, does that have the carribean sea? Would welcome any knowledge/info. THANKS

Have a look at www.tripadvisor.com before you travel. This site has plenty of reviews on a lot of places.

The Dominican Republic is situated in the western Carribbean but why not go further east instead and try one of the other islands like for instance Antigua, Barbados or St Lucia?.

www.lonelyplanet.com/mapshells/caribbean/dominican_republic/dominican_republic.htm

Have a look at this map and it will also give you further information, the resorts in the north of this island have the Atlantic Ocean facing them.

I would go further east and try one of the other Carribbean islands instead.

Hi marshmellow, we spent Christmas in the DR two years ago. We stayed one week in the Iberostar Bavaro and one week at Sunscape Resort (great kids club) also in Bavaro. The Punta Cana region and Bayahibe (which is south of the island) are both on the Caribbean.
I've also been to Barbados, Antigua and Mexico (Gala Resort, Playacar in Playa del Carmen) so if you want comparisons just ask. I know the DR is one of the cheapest Caribbean destinations from the UK along with Jamaica but we found Mexico to be comparable price wise. The DR is still renown for poor food hygeine and I have to say that both my husband and I were ill and our friend from Canada who was out there at the same time had to be hospitalised before flying home. I've never lost so much weight in such a short space of time however! As MeerKatsUnite suggests go to tripadvisor for hotel reviews and definitely refer to this website for all you need to know about the DR Debbies Dominican Travel including more hotel reviews than you'll have time to read!

Thank you so much for those bits. Antigua etc are alot more expensive but maybe i should go for a week to one of those for the same price as 2 in Dom Rep. Don't like the idea of poor hygiene and the possiblity of sick children on holiday!! I wanted all inclusive but find most Barbados hols are Room Only. Is it very expensive out there? Or could i do RO and eat out for next to nothing?

marshmellow we stayed all inclusive in Barbados at the Turtle Beach Resort (excellent kids club) and AI again at the Jolly Beach Hotel in Antigua (gorgeous beach location) but you are right it is more expensive than the DR. Why not consider Cuba or the Mexican Riviera (or possibly even Jamaica although there are mixed reviews about safety off resort there dependent upon location) instead of the DR. I think you will find prices are very similar and you will still get a two week holiday instead of one. I can recommend the Gala Resort in Playacar, Mexico if you are travelling with children but Cuba gets favourable reviews and looks beautiful. Hope to get there one day too.
