M23/Brighton outskirts

Please can you suggest a picnic spot on the outskirts of Brighton or just off M23. We are meeting DSS on Sunday with DS2(8) and DS3 (nearly 3). Somewhere for then to run around and then get an ice cream. Maybe closer to Brighton so we could go there later in the afternoon although not absolutely necessary as DSS will be travelling from Wimbledon and we are coming from East Sussex and so one of us would have to double back. Thanks

Try Stanmer Park, just on outskirts of Brighton. There's a little village with ice creams and lots of woodland for scrambling around in, duck pond, open grassland. It's a lovely place.

Tilgate Park in Crawley is fab. Big lake with walks round, play area, large grass areas for picnics and small farm too. There is a cafe, pub and ice cream van. Downside is the £3 car park charge but worth it
