France: Where would you stop off overnight between Calais and La Rochelle?

We've booked out main accommodation just south of La Rochelle but want to make a couple of overnight stops on the way. I don't know France at all so any pointers would be good.

Also Novotels offer really good family accommodation - pools, playgrounds, free breakfast for kids, children's menus etc. But they tend to be more motorway stop off points though some are in town. Website

We are booked in to the Novotel at Rouen Sud on our way back from Cognac to Brussels.

What a coincidence - I've just booked us into the Rouen Sud Novotel and the Tours Sud one as well :)

What night will you be there?

The Marais Poitevin region would make a good stopover.
