Jars of baby food in Spain/Any Mumsnetters there?

I am off to Madrid for 9 days on Friday and am wondering whether I should pack jars of baby food or whether I should be able to buy good baby food there (Hipp preferably). Does anyone know?

I will have to entertain myself during the day (without access to mumsnet) during the 5 week days I am there, so if there are any mumsnetters who would like to meet up for a coffee or whatever that would be great! Let me know.

I've mainly seen "Hero" there, but I'm pretty sure that it's organic. Most of the big supermarkets (which would have a wider range) are out of town so maybe take a couple of jars just in case you don't fancy any of what you see.

Sorry not to be much help, we stay with relatives so DD just got homemade stuff when she was at the mush stage!

No, Hero isn't organic.

You can buy Hipp in all medium-big supermarkets, but like all Spanish baby food it contains salt. It's really weird really: the ingredients are exactly the same exceot for the salt. Plus there aren't nearly as many varieties. I used to get people to bring jars of baby food over from the UK for DD (but then I'm fussy - I made her food most of the time).

Have a good holiday! shame I'm not in Madrid really (Granada).

Thanks guys. I think I'll take some from home to be on the safe side.

watch ou tfor my Mum and Dad - there from wed till sat.

Have a nasty habit of drinking water out of emptied Gin bottles (plastic)when walking around - wish they would soak the labels off first

Just got back from Spain and hipp was available in supermarkets. Baby ate it - and the spanish varieties which all seemed good.

Just back from Madrid. I took most of my food, but did buy some there too. I only went to 2 supermarkets, and 1 of them had Hipp but only some fruit that was in a thicker jelly-like form which was very sweet (so naturally ds loved it). The other brand there was Nutriben which is organic, but the jars with meat had 20% meat which was too strong for my ds who is more used to 10%.

BTW, I suffered quite a bit of culture shock going from Germany to Spain, as the spanish were so friendly and helpful and loved babies so much that I felt much more relaxed - even though I couldn't speak a word of spanish. Whereas the germans would see me nearly drop my ds while struggling with bags, stroller, car seat and baby bjorn and not say a word or offer me any help.

Glad you had a good time AussieSim.

I like the baby-friendliness of Spain too - you can always find a stranger to help and you usually don't have to ask. (Mind you, they're not always much help. Almost every time I park in a multi-storey, some helpful Spanish man starts yelling instructions and one grabbed the wheel once.)

Amazing too that they're like that even in the capital - in most capitals people are not so friendly!
