Skiing in Norway with Neilson

Anyone been - either to Norway skiing, or skiing with Neilson - or both.

Thinking of going with kids at Easter, but don't know much about the country or the company.

Yes, I recommend Geilo and Trysil. I don't know the company though.

Not been skiing with Nielson - but they were great for a dinghy sailing holiday. The child care was great too.

Not been but have heard its excellent for x country skiing but VERY limited for downhill.. It can suit families with young children tho. Fairly simple approach to life.
Booze is ££££
Not 'pretty pretty'
Self catering can be high quality and cheap.
Why Norway?

I think you can get money off if you have tescos vouchers (for each £2.50 of vouchers you get £10 off your holiday) - maybe?

Did both last Jan - Geilo Apartments - fab accomodation and location - what do you need to know? Ski-ing was great for ds (first time) instruction first class - Norwegian instructors with perfect english, managed to eat quite cheaply buying from the main supermarket in the town, with any offers that were on. Buy some duty free on the way in to the country though as drinks are ££££! We didn't eat or drink out, if you don't want to cook look at half board options? We booked through IGLU ski who have some good offers on at the moment - Switzerland this January!

Like others have said the self catering was first class - original artwork on the walls and antique furniture in the apartment, very very comfortable - loved the underfloor heating! And scenery was lovely - we booked as they do other activites there like sleigh rides, dog sledding etc, which was all a big hit. Try the night time tobogganing if you get the chance, the things really go!

Thanks so much for all this feedback. Even person at Neilson said booze and food was pricey - but we're looking at half board in a hotel in Geilo - I'll have an 11 week old baby (and a c section) so don't fancy cooking anyway plus there's a pool/spa if I don't want to ski. Easy skiing will suit us this year - we're usually red run folk, but be happy to take it easy as probably not getting much sleep and will still be feeling scar.

Fancied Norway cos looked at lots of other places and not much available plus sick of ESF snotty French instructors and fancy a hotel rather than a chalet as we don't want to share chalet (we're 4 adults and 2 kids).

Glad childcare got a thumbs up - think that makes a skiing holiday.

Very excited now - will book tonight! Any other info though much appreciated.

The instructors were LOVELY and small groups too - ds went from beginner to Reds in 6 half day group sessions - both ds and dd loved it there - esp the trips on the Sleigh ride etc. Generally the Norwegians we met we very friendly and the whole place felt very trustworthy - we left skis + boots for instance unlocked every night in the changing rooms at the centre (as did everyone else). I am sure you will love it

HI, we went skiing & had a great time. We went with Neilson & had a few problems with our room - we were supposed to have a family room, so moved to another hotel. We booked with Igluski & got a very reasonable price. The transfers were good & the flight quite short.

We went in January & it was FREEZING - March would be better. We put DD into a creche, she was 7 mths which was very close to the lifts.

The snow was fab, almost as good as the US.

My friend came with us & she has been to Geilo, shall I ask which she prefered ?

I went to Geilo in Jan 2002 and it was freezing. -5 was ok but it went down to -20 which was a bit too cold! We went with neilson who were ok but I wouldn't book a ski pass through them. We went for 10 days and were told a load of rubbish by the rep (on the coach) that we wouldn't be able to get a certain type of ski pass then found, once in the resort, that we could. We complained and they refunded the difference in cost.

Slopes are quite basic but plenty to occupy you for a week. Very expensive to buy food & drink though.
