We are taking a long weekedn in Cracow next weekend. We had planned on visiting Austwitch and the salt mines however have recently heard that children under 12 yeara sre not allowed into Austwitch. Does this include babies? Also can you take children into the salt mines?

Any other tips on Cracow would be very welcome.

I agree that Auschwitz is extremely upsetting, but I am very glad I went. I definitely wouldn't take a child there, or a teenager as it is a very powerful experience.

I first went to Auschwitz and Birkenau when I was 10 to lay down a wreath as a representative of a scouting group from Germany. It was upsetting, but I didn't see anything I hadn't heard about already. I would take a well-prepared older child or teenager.

Wounds like that doesn't apply to you, though, Dophus! Cracow itself is a beautiful city, the cafes on the cathedral square are lovely, and the cathedral is stunning.

DS is 10 months so too young to understand. I guess this is why we are keen to go now otherwise we will have to wait many many years (or ditch the kids) before visiting. Why I feel the need to go I don;' know. I was in floods of tears at the imperial war museum holocost exhibition.

Thanks for the link Pruni
