I sued to live in the Peak District, and not too far away now. Peak District falls into 2 main parts - White Peak in the south, Dark Peak in the north. Very popular areas are around Hope, Castleton, Matlock, Ashbourne. You may be better off looking at the very north peaks - lovely country side - around Holmfirth. As well as Holmfirth (a market town) look in the outlying villages like Lane Village, Digley, Holme Village, Upperthong, Netherthong, Hade Edge, Jackson Bridge.

Penistone is a market town in not-quite Peaks, but still set in lovely countryside too. Not so touristy, so may have more availability - search Penistone, Upper Denby, Langsett, Thurlstone, Silkstone, Bradfield, Flouch, Cawthorne.

We spent Xmas/NY once in Parwich - not far from Ashbourne. Lovely little village with a shop/pub. Rented a cottage through cottages4you.

Bradfield is really pretty, Penistone has Cubley Hall. Or there is Wortley Hall in Wortley or the Dog and Partridge on Woodhead Pass near the Flouch roundabout.

we stayed in Hathersage at xmas once which was great - hill walking from the door - great pubs. very reasonable cottage prices, we paid about £350 for a week in a cottage (fairly basic but warm and clean). also on the train line - manchester 50 mins and sheffield 20 mins in the other direction with loads of other lovely villages on the line too. best of all worlds!
