The cheaper places are on the Damrak, which runs from the station down to Dam Square.

We stayed in one a few years ago - all 8 of us in one room. I think they usually do stag weekends. It was fine for us and we didn't run into any unsavoury people. Our hotel was the Delta, iirc.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn, which is just outside the centre, a 10 minute tram ride to the centre, which the DC loved. Its also opposite a fabulous park, which was virtually empty when we went in the Easter holidays. Amazing buffet breakfast, perfectly adequate clean rooms.

I would avoid Damrak if you have a baby, it's the main drag from CS to the Dam square and busy and noisy (and tacky)....

here's the official website

There's a great zoo in Amsterdam by the way.
