Flying in June and taking 2 car seats - what do I put them into??

We fly in a fortnight with a 4 year old and a baby and want to take their car seats with us. What do I need to put them into when I check them? Do I put them in a black bin sack? Help please!!

Just as they are usually, they go in as excess/outsize baggage. You might want to put something on them, stickers maybe or coloured tape in shape of your initials, so you can recognise 'your' seats when they come on the carousel/outsize baggage belt.

Thanks ImeldaM. Bit worried the pieces of the booster seat for my toddler might come apart - but guess I can tape them together?

We have just bought a car seat bag from Kiddicare. Huge black bag that says 'car seat' on, so in theory it will be looked after once it's checked in and not just thrown about. Dont really believe this but at least it will be easy to travel with!

i would try and get boxes for them if i were you, and pad them as well as you can with bubble wrap etc

i would NOT trust baggage handlers to treat anything carefully, and being thrown about is not good for car seats!

Which airport are you flying from? I know at heathrow you can get car seats wrapped in a cling filmy type wrap for £6 a seat. The company that does it at heathrow is called excess baggage...although not sure if you will be able to do it at the airport at the other end for your return home...

Here is a link, it's at the bottom of this page:

Thanks so much - will have a look at the car seat bag and if not, will try boxes. Do I need to check with the airline if that's ok? We are flying with Manchester. The cling wrap idea is great but don't think they will have anything like that for our return from Palma.

GoingToBeSize12 - can't seem to find a car seat bag on kiddicare - is there a special name for it? (or am I being dense??)

This is the one we have here. It's very cheap at the moment as well!

lulalullabye · 23/05/2011 03:39

Go to B&Q and buy some heavy duty rubble bags. That is what we always do and have been all around the world. Rubble bags and packing tape.
Much cheaper and very tough.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 23/05/2011 12:39

Call your airline. Some provide free bags for oversized luggage such as car seats.

ClareyScott · 23/05/2011 15:58

Thank you all - think I am going to be a cheapskate and try the rubble bags option as the 2 car seats are such different sizes. Really appreciate the help xx
