Lyme regis coastal works?

Has anyone been there recently (not in July/August)? According to the Lyme Bay website there are works going on and the main beach and gardens may be closed. Would it still be worth going for a short break? DS very keen on fossils at the moment....

Hi Flo - how's it going? I know I am not answering your question but we spent the last 2 weeks of June there and in a sad way, the works didn't spoil anything. Ds loved watching the diggers, huge lorries etc so it sort of added something! It's still a lovely town and you aren't looking for a beach holiday so I would still recommend it. Sorry my info isn't up to date though.

Beansprout, hi! i have missed you - the October thread is not the same really. Mwah mwah to you and hugs to your little DS.

Anyway I think these works started in April 2005, so June was probably indicative of off-season state. Was the beach completely off limits? We are thinking of hiring a cottage there but could do Charmouth instead I guess - I just thought the shops etc would make it more interesting for me!

Big hugs to y'all too - ye gods they are one now - can you believe it?!!

Only a bit of the beach was off limits while we were there. Could still get onto bits of it and onto the Cobb and all of the shops . There is a long promenade so the sea front is still v accessible. The Council had a whole showroom devoted to the works, their history and progress and so I would imagine it would be v easy to contact them, even prob via their website, to establish what's going on. Would say that when we were there, they did tend to start early, so you might want to avoid booking anywhere too near the work itself. Have a fab time though, it's a lovely place

thanks! We must try to catch up soon (in a virtual sense)....

its all finished now

make sure you go to west bay and stand in the circle at the end of the new concrete harbour - then talk

florenceuk. We were there in October and unfortunately the beach and gardens were closed.

However, you can go to Monmouth beach near to the Cobb where we found quite a few fossil hunters. There is a car park near by, just walk past the chalets/beach huts and you come onto the beach. It can be very slippery if it's raining so be careful. Charmouth is good too. Oh and West Bay.

My ds was fascinated by all the diggers down on the main beach.

HTH

sorry I thought it was all finished

charmouth better for fossils anyway

the little dinosaur museum in Lyme is sweet, the kids get a quiz and then you get to pick a semi precious gemstone, they have loads of fossils for sale

I think the gardens are closed until next summer from what the signs said. It's not all of them though, the bit with the crazy golf shoudl still be open as far as I know. I think the beach at the far end (near the church) should be unaffected, and that's the best bet for fossils so you should be fine. There's a fair bit of information available from here . Have a nice time if you go (I am kind of imagining the whole place in deep mourning for John Fowles at the moment, but I'm sure it's not!)

thanks everyone, doesn't sound ideal but manageable. Now just have to find somewhere to stay!

Beach def closed now although you can walk along the prom. Second the suggestion of fosil hunting in Charmouth, best to go after a storm as it rakes up a lot more. Shops in Lyme are a twee and a couple of nice tea rooms. Dino museum in Lyme is quite good too.

Flo = Lyme Bay Holidays (I think that is what they are called) have got the whole place just about stiched up. They have a website. We rented from them and they were fab
