We want to go away mid August (2 adults 2 kids) somewhere in Europe but want to leave it til literally 2 days before we go to book. Please tell me your success stories of doing this

There is no such thing in school holidays. Why do you wish to wait until 2 days before? Don't you enjoy looking forward to a holiday?
Best deals are in May and June.
Mine are at secondary school now and while I was happy to take them on holiday in term time when they were little it's out of the question now. For me and millions of others.
It's supposed to be cheaper the further ahead you can book for August, but I never get around to it until the spring when flights and choice are becoming limited.

I booked my August 2011 holiday in August 2010.

Leave it late and you run the great risk of finding nothing or finding the last turkey in the shop. Holidays go unsold for a reason.

Now is a good time to look for bargains as this is the time that the August holidays bought a while ago are now being cancelled (this is the last chance to cancel where you lose only the deposit). Only leave it late if you dont care where you go, what the accomodation is like or how you will get there.

I'm not sure you will find much last minute in August. You would do best to look now or you could be disappointed.

I would definately recommend having a look now, esp on internet, alpharooms are good as are lowcostholidays. Cheaper hols are usually to places where you can get reasonably priced flights fron somewhere like easyjet or Jet2, eg mainland spain or portugal as opposed to islands.

You can definately get lots cheaper on the net than by using a travel agent, & the cheaper airlines best prices are for early booking.
