Window and door alarm for hotel windows and french doors

We are going away and will be staying in a self catering family suite in a hotel. We'll have french doors out onto a small balcony (or the pool patio if on ground floor) and I'd like to be able to secure those somehow for whilst the DDs are sleeping and we are having dinner in the dining areas of our small suite and sleeping in our room.

I'm most worried because they said they can't guarantee a non ground floor suite and having read lots about Madeleine McCann recently I'm bothered that once we get there I might not be happy that it is as secure as it could be, again, bothered mostly if we end up on the ground floor.

Is there a thingy-ma-bob you can buy to put on the french doors which will alarm sound if they open?
Hopefully, when we get there I will be happy with the set up but I thought if there is a holiday alarm you can buy it wouldn't be a bad investment because I can use it each holiday if I felt we needed to.

I had exactly the same fears when we went to France with the DDs. I found a door alarm that stuck on with pads for patio doors in poundland of all places. I also got one of the rape alarms with a pull out cord and rigged it up around the handles.

I always request 1st floor for the same reasons as you have said. My DH thinks I am nuts but I would rather this be the case than have anything happen!

However saying all the above, we go to France every year and on the whole when we have had a ground floor appartment we have found locks to be very secure and weird I know but I always put something in front of the doors when we go to sleep like a chair so the scraping noise would wake me up.

It would be great to not have to think about such things but I always enjoy my hols knowing I have done everything I possibly can.

D'oh, I hadn't thought of a rape alarm, thats a genius idea. Will get one of those and will go and see if I can find something like you found in poundland.

I know its so unlikely that something would happen but I figure if I buy a gadget now when they are little and then I can use it whenever we go away and like you, it'll let me rest easier knowing I've done all I can.

Could you not just get some of the long heavy duty cable ties you get in a hardware store and tie the french door handles together? No alarm but would slow someone down trying to get in and they would end up making a fair amount of noise trying to open the doors?
