Travelling round Turkey

We're off to Turkey for 3 weeks next month. We'll start by taking the train to Kars (in the north east) then spend the rest of the time working our way back, probably to Cappadoccia, from where we'll take the train back to Istambul. Has anyone got any recommendations of must-see places (or must-avoid)?

Pamukale and Efes are 2 musts! Take a couple of boat rides as well

There are some beautiful places in Turkey. I would advise having a look on Trip Advisort or Lonley Planet's Thorn Tree forum for more advice on where to go.

thank-you, I just hope we get there now (ash cloud looming)

www.seat61.com has good advice about trains in Turkey.

Your holiday sounds great. Why are you starting in Kars?

sonearsofar · 25/05/2011 17:48

Yes, we booked our train from Istanbul with its help. Well, Kars, because that's as far as you can go, do a bit of exploring in the hills to the north, and spend the rest of the time making our way back. We haven't managed to book a hotel in Kars yet, which is a bit worrying, but I'm really looking forward to it.

We did a trip Antalya - Konya - Gaziantep - Aleppo mainly by train, it was great fun and I really enjoyed visiting "proper" Turkey.
