boiled water or bottled water - what's best for 10 mo?

I'm going to Ibiza and was just wondering what water I should give to my 10 month old? I'm taking a kettle so would boiled tap water be best or bottled mineral water?
Thanks in advance...

Bottled is far handier, and cooler, and you can take it with you.

thanks mathanxiety. So it's safe then? I just was wondering from a safety point of view as I'd heard bottled water can have too high a mineral or salt content...? Think I may be being a bit pfb...

Hi,

My DS was born in France and we were advised - well actually told in no uncertain terms by head midwife - Evian mineral water. She looked absolutely horrified at the idea of tap water! So in terms of safety for your baby if you are thinking of bottled water Evian is fine for them (sure boiled tap water would be OK as well though Smile).

Mineral water is not sterile and has minerals in it which can be hard to digest. Boiled tap water isn't completely sterile either as it also contains minerals and bacteria in it which may be hard to digest or hard to wipe out even if its boiled continuously for a few minutes before using/storing. And definitely not water from the hot tap!Distilled water is the only kind of water I can think of which is the "cleanest" water out there. It doesn't have minerals and yes its sterile. But saying that, its probably not something to worry too much about... its not like we sterilise every single thing our babies put into their mouths everyday. I've used boiled tap water for my DD1 when she was a baby and it hadn't caused her any stomach upsets or anything... I wouldn't use mineral water though but its just me :) Enjoy your holiday btw!

Can you get distilled water? I used distilled when travelling and filtered tap water for home (high chlorine content in tap water where I lived). A normal healthy 10 month old who is crawling around on floors is going to have quite a robust immune system.

I lived abroad when my DD was a baby and I gave her the same as all the other mums living there - bottled water, definitely not tap water.

Some bottled water has a lower sodium content and those are the best to go for, you should be able to see it in the lable.

Isn't the water drinkable by adults in Ibiza? If it's ok for adults, it's ok for a 10 mo.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 11/05/2011 12:15

Don't give distilled water it is not suitable for drinking even in adults.

Evian is safe for babies, ask the locals what they are giving their babies for a cheaper option. Bottled spring water is usually suitable.

The problem with tap water when you travel is not necessarily bacteria so boiling is not enough. The main concern in europe is heavy metals, nitrates and pesticides which aren't destroyed by boiling.

Better to use spring water rather than mineral water.

I always bought Evian when dd was little.

Suzie1601 · 12/05/2011 21:36

Would Evian be the best water to use when making up bottles? I also have 10 month old and heading off to Tenerife in a week and have been worring about using boiled tap or buying bottles which ive also heard about high salt content.

ElsieR · 12/05/2011 21:42

In France, they say Evian is fine for bottles.

Suzie1601 · 12/05/2011 21:54

Thats good enough for me then! Smile Thanks! I can now put that out of my head and get on with worring about the flight haha!

emsken · 17/05/2011 19:29
