wanting to book a one nighter / 2 dayer break for dh for his big birthday this year - thought edinburgh as its 2 hrs on train from our neck of woods but he doesnt want to go away without the kids (4 and 8). So can you go and not need a car and can anyone recommend anywhere a bit nice to stay with kids and probs near train stn as we wont have the car. We need something exciting for us all to do as a family too.

Not been with kids but been twice without a car, it's a very pedestrian-friendly city and everything central is within easy reach of the station. The obvious stuff to do is wander up to the castle and along the Royal Mile. If the weather's good and the kids like walking then Arthur's Seat is a good stroll. We stayed in the Hilton but I'm sure there are loads of accommodation options. I love Edinburgh, sure you'll have a great time :)

Holiday Inn next to the Zoo is lovely and bus stop right outside going into town.

The Apex international in Grassmarket is good and kids eat free. It is in walking distance of the castle, princes st, museum, gallery.
