I know it is an authorization payment but how much do they actually take?

I have e-mailed several companies to ask to make sure I have enough funds but none of them have replied!

Just want to make certain it goes through okay, we have paid off most of outstanding balance at the start of the year and asked them to reduce our limit in an effort to stop us overspending.

TIA

I don't know the answer, I don't think they take any money, just the security of having your details... BUT we hired a car in Italy last year and 8 months after our return we got 2 parking offences in the post and the company had taken £120 from our card (already, before we received the offence notice)
We definitely did not park illegally, I speak Italian and read the signs carefully.
It was definitely a scam and we had to cencel our card, Halifax are currently chasing up the money to get it refunded for us, whether we will succeed I have no idea.
Just a word of warning.

Europcar took £50 off my credit card then it went back on when the car was returned

Oh, thats great, should be okay then.

It said on the Hertz website about the authorization and that you should ensure you have enough on your card to cover all charges but didnt list what they were!

Thank you both.

Be careful if you it's a cc in pounds and they taking a holding deposit in a different currency. Rate of exchange fluctuations could put you out of pocket on return of vehicle even though the car hire company is putting back the same amount. Of course, it if swings the other way you could make a profit, lol!

Walter - what a pain about the parking fines. Did you get the original Italian offence notices in the post (doesn't surprise me about the 8 months!)? What illegal parking offence did they say you committed?
