Clearwater, Florida

We're going to Florida for 3 weeks over the summer. Flights booked, and have booked a week either end of the holiday in Orlando to do Disney, the parks etc.

We'd like to spend the middle week at the beach. Can't be too far a drive from Orlando, so the Keys etc are out. Considering Clearwater, but can't really get a sense of what it is like from my internet searches so far. Does anyone know it well enough to comment? Suitability for a family holiday, where to stay (which area), areas to eat out, any apartment recommendations would be good, too.

We stayed in Clearwater Beach for a long weekend in Feb 2009. It has a very nice, clean, white sand beach, but to be honest there isn't a lot to do. IMO Sarasota is a bit more happening. Depends what you want though. We stayed at the Clarion Suites, which worked well with one small child. Pool was lovely, beach across the street, nice playground in park next to beach. But not a lot of restaurants or other stuff to do other than beach/pool/playground.

Sorry, it was Marriott Suites at Sand Key, not Clarion Suites.

To be honest, I'm not to bothered about there being not much to do, as we have action packed weeks either end of the holiday, so this will be a bit of a rest from the hustle and bustle, hopefully. Just want a nice beach, a pool and a clean apartment to chill out in!
