Affordable places to stay in Northern France?

Apologies if anyone's watching as I'm going to post and run, but can anyone recommend affordable (ie cheap!) places to stay in Northern France? Holiday funds have run dry and I have found I can get ferry tickets from Dover to Dunkerque in the summer hols for £80 (as opposed to £250+ for anything further west) but there's no point if we're then going to be faced with £700-odd for accommodation. 2 adults, 1 child, we're happy to drive along to the Cherbourg peninsula taking a few days along the way, or if Belgium is nice we'd consider going east too.

Thanks!

Holiday rentals or Cottages4you

PS the Belgian coast is lovely, particularly De Haan. Website Loads of things to do and the beaches are huge expanses of sand.

This site brought up a huge list under 500 euros in August.

Thanks Porto - I really like the Holiday Rentals one in Embry. Will work on DH when I get home...
