if it is really just a day, then the train museum can take all of that. there's also Jorvik, the gallery in the park and the York dungeon (assuming that the Minster won't hold much appeal). there's also a good play place called Creepy Crawlies, but it might be a bit young for a 6 yr old.

Walk round the Walls
castle museum
Yorkshire museum (think it's that)
go on a boat on the river
open top bus tour

will think of more things (and ask my 7 year old and 5 year old what they like doing)

Creepy crawlies is good. My 7 year old still likes it :)

Place called Dig

When we were last in York, we stayed in the City Centre, and did Jorvik, Dungeon and the Minster.

The Minster is literally awesome.

I agree with Mutt and wouldn't recommend the York dungeon for a 6 year old. I took DD when she was 8 and she was pretty scared. They even asked when I was paying to get in whether she really wanted to go in.

DD thoroughly enjoyed the castle museum when she was 7. Jorvik and the minster are good, but the Railway Museum will take up at least half a day, so you won't get many more sights in. A river trip is a good idea if you want to rest your legs.

my DD was petrified of the Jorvik when she was 9. She wouldn't even get in the car. Staff were brilliant and let us wait at the end for DH and DS then let me on and let DS go round again with me.

hotandhappy · 24/04/2011 19:28

creepy crawlies is good i 2nd that and the waterworld park thing, failing that my fave is to go with the girls on the train and get utterly peeeeesd for the day Grin

HalleluiaScot · 24/04/2011 19:58

What's petrifying about Jorvik? You couldn't make it more sanitised.

bruffin · 25/04/2011 09:46

dd has an overactive imagination - Not sure what she found scarey but she didn't even get in the car. She had a second chance to get on when we waited at the end but she still couldn't do it.
