Visa - information required (USA)

I gather you need a visa to go to the USA now. I remember reading some celebs etc have been barred from the states for having a criminal record. Is this the case for everyone or does it depend on what your record is for? Is it like declaring convictions over here, whereby after so many years you dont have to declare them?

Any advice or info gratefully received.

Check with the visa office in the American
Embassy in London or check their website?

We went last year, and I think the visa only applied in some cirumstances.
We just had to fill out the usual im stuff on the plane.

You used to have to have one just to visit as a tourist but I'm fairly sure you don't now. (DS1 went on a school trip last week and he didn't have one.)
