I know it's a long way off but I want to to do googling and planning

Next summer, we're going to spend around a week in the south of France - roughly between Cannes and St Tropez but then want to spend a few days staying in Italy. I long to go to Italy and have never before been so could anyone tell me a lovely town that vibrant with stuff to do but which is not a long drive over the French border? We have two kids - who will be 10 and 7.
Imagine Sarlat in France - similar size town/stuff to do/history etc to stay in Italy.
