help! Rental car in California - do I need the paper part of my driving license?

Avis site says yes, but I dont think I have the paper counterpart anywhere - just the plastic ID card.

Any advice? Do they actually ask for it, or is photo ID driving license ok on its own.

thanks everyone...

I think you do. DH always takes it when we hire a car and they do look at it.

Yes they want to see it. I had to produce the paper part for hire car last time we were there and they photocopied mine.
So yes you will need it

You'll need it. The license has two parts - one part on it's own isn't a full license.

If nothing else, surely points are recorded on the paper part, so they'd want to see if there are any?

ok and thank you! husband has his, so hopefully all will be well, and he can do the driving! thanks

They only ever look at the paper part in the UK - in all my time driving overseas no one has ever looked at it

We rented a car in Texas last month and I didn't need the paper part of my license despite being told that I did prior to going. So take the plastic bit and see if you can go on as a driver too.
