you should have photo id - we were advised we needed passports or photo driving licences although no one actually asked to see them. We did travel by boat though.

When I phoned the passport office helpline I was told:

  • If travelling by plane you will need photo-ID and that the airline's policy may well be that you need a passport. If in doubt check with the airline.

  • If travelling by boat you won't need a passport but it is strongly advised that you carry valid official photo-ID. Double-check with the ferry company.

I went on the ferry and was never asked for any ID either on the boat itself or while in Ireland.

you do need passports.
We went last year and he took my photo id but said we'd need passports next time.
We've just been a few weeks ago too. (with passports)

mine arrived within about 10 days (for 3 of us) as no one could actually advise exactly what we needed so thought it best to get passport

well i was in ireland for half term and we go home at least twice a year and it was the first time we were asked to prove who you were just before you leave depature and hand over your boarding tickead to get on the plane even you have to show your pasport to get a boarding tickead at cheak in i tought it was a bit over the top so i strongly sugest you get a pasport for every body ps. the weather was crap i would bring your wellies !!!

We were over in April, flew BA and didn't need a passport. We did need photo id however so you would need to check who you are flying with and what they require.
