Hotel recommendations for New York

Can anyone recommend somewhere good to stay in New York. Going there (without dcs - yay!) for dh's 40th birthday. Looking for something that is more luxury than budget but not ridiculous OTT prices. Nice bathrooms, nice bed linen essential. Not noisy (although can be in a noisy location if the soundproofing is good). Ideally a hotel with a fab restaurant or close to some.

And not too posey or dressy or too corporate/business hotel like.

If you have a look at Trip Advisor you'll get a lot of recommendations and info. The MNet of travel.

I would strongly recommend staying in Soho - great restaurants and bars and you really feel like you're in the midst of things.

The Soho Grand is a very cool hotel, as is the Mercer and 60 Thompson. A little further south is the Tribeca Grand, also very nice.

Have a look at the Hip Hotels site - it usually has very good hotels - and the Mr & Mrs Smith site does some very good deals.

Ah, 60 Thompson was on dh's shortlist, and The Standard.

I hate Trip Advisor - always makes me doubt everywhere I'm thinking of going.

We stayed in the Hotel Chandler (I liked the Friends reference!) - it was fine, a really great central position (just round corner from the Empire State Building, would really recommend it. It was comfortable but not ridiculously expensive.

Oh just looking at the website brings back lovely memories - eating hot fresh bagels on the bed for breakfast... mmm! (fab bagel shop round corner)

stayed in the Hudson part of the Morgan group, brilliant hotel and location and funky club inside it to boot - go there

The Algonquin - close to Times Square, lots of history behind it, really nice hotel with nice staff

I just stayed at The Carlton Hotel at the beginning of April and it was lovely and perfectly located imo and very reasonably priced, located in midtown. I used to live in NYC (For 5 yrs) and its within easy walking distance of Madison Sq Park, where the Flatiron Building is, the Empire State Building, one block from the Ace Hotel which has a great restaurant, a short walk to Eataly, Union Sq, and close to the subway - the N&R or the 6 Lexington Line.

I thought it was perfect. I did consider Hotel Chandler also, which is nearby but would return to the Carlton in preference because its closer to those places I mentioned. It was also very quiet, no traffic noise or noise from other rooms, the corridor etc. Frette Sheets, Molten Brown toiletries, marble bathrooms, huge flatscreen TV - just wonderful. Staff were also friendly and helpful, and there's free wifi in all rooms and throughout the entire hotel. Do spring for a larger room though as the standard one i was did have quite a small (only full size) bed. But it was very comfortable with good pillows another bugbear of mine!)

French quarters guest apartments. Very small, on resturant row. right at the top of the trip advisor list and by far the nicest place i have stayed in in New York. BUT it is small and they dont do room service etc.

Chambers on West 56th is lovely (the have duvets as well which makes me :o), just of 5th Avenue, so very central, ditto the St. Regis, on East 55th.

The Carlyle on the UES is a m a z i n g, but depending on what you are planning on doing, you might prefer to stay closer to mid town.
