OK for the last few years we have rented a cottage somewhere for a couple of weeks in the summer, and dh is keen to do this again as he hates what he sees as the only alternative - sun sea and sand. Personally I quite like a bit of sun, sea and sand and the dks would too (they will be 7 and 5 next summer). However I have to agree with dh that two weeks sat on a hot beach in Spain or wherever would be very dull - we both like getting out and exploring, but tolerate beaches for the dk's sakes.

However I'm getting bored of the usual holiday cottage and want to go abroad! Does anyone have any ideas for a cheapish family holiday abroad somewhere that will satisfy all of us? We'd all love to go skiing but have other commitments that mean we probably wouldn't be able to go until late winter 2007, and we need something next summer!

TIA

Not sure if it falls into cheapish category but Barcelona is fab for families. Loads to see, great zoo, aquarium, "living" statues and a beach as well.

we went to the isle of man this year for a few days and absolutely loved it. ok so it's still the uk, but over the sea! plety of nice beaches (esp ramsay), not too crowded and makes you feel like you've gone back in time.

or there's the alpujarras - very pretty, lots of walking and stuff and the beach is about 20 mins drive away (or a bit further depending on how high up you're staying)

you can get cottages and farm houses etc in Fance or Spain. I think some please you can live on a working farm picking grapes and olives etc. I have always fancied that as I would love to cruch grapes the old fashioned way.
I would wash my feet first of course and I'm sure kids would love it.

Look at the Crystal Active brochure for ideas? Not ness book with them but they have lots of ideas for Summer activity type holidays, in Austria and France etc. Stuff to do if you want to, lakes to swim in, cycling...

Try Austria in the summer. Have a look at www.tiscover.at and www.farmholidays.com for starters.
