Greece - October Half Term

Have been saving frantically for ages and we have now decided to splurge on a holiday in the October half term. I have thought of Greece but would love some personal recommendations. Would like somewhere that had something for my 8 year old son and some 'historic' bits that we could look at. I imagine that 'historic' wont be a problem in Greece though. More worried that everything will be shut down in October. Any advice would be gratefully received.

I wouldn't do Greece in October half term - weather dodgy and, yes, almost everything is shut down by then. Sorry!

Actually, thinking for another minute (sorry), what about Cyprus? Further south so weather lasts longer and plenty of sites to look at. Crete is the other alternative because of it's location and sights.

I've never been so no personal recommendations I'm afraid but I was recommended the Dome hotel in Cyprus although when I looked at it, it didn't look our cup of tea at all but as I say, it was recommended so guess it depends what floats your boat.

How about Rhodes? Average temp is around 21 degrees. Not scorchio but still tee shirt weather and better for sight seeing than 30 degree temps.

A few recommendations of places to stay on this thread which I started yesterday. As you will see, we are planning on taking a trip there next April in order to avoid the crowds and see the sights.

Or Crete, very south and full of 'istory. Mainland Greece is sadly a bit weather-dodgy, we have been flooded at that time before, and a lot will be shut as already said. Unless you went for Athens? Lots to see/do.

I've lived on Rhodes - did 5 Octobers . Yes things start winding down (touristy supermarkets low on stock some bars/restaurants may reduce opening hours) but most places are open until the last tourist leaves. Realistically you have to expect a naff overcast day in October BUT it could easily be sunny all week. Rhodes Town will be fully open -even if you base yourselves in the South ,with car hire town is no more than 45min .
Much more enjoyable hiking up to the acropolis in Lindos , or to Tsampika monastery in October than in July/August. Grin

Crete would be lovely in OCtober, still quite warm, and I think the "season" runs until the end of OCtober.....

Have a look here... good travel agency, lots of price ranges, and good to talk to on the phone as every place is personally chosen and visited etc...
