Taking formula milk on plane

Travelling to Spain with DS when he will be 9 months old. The security restrictions for the airport say that you can take formula milk through security "although you may be asked to taste the foods to prove that
they are indeed baby food. However, boiled water (to be mixed with formula milk powder) in quantities over 100 ml are not allowed in the hand baggage."

Does this mean I need to pre-make the milk (in my usual 210ml bottle) and try to keep it cool? I can't take separate water and milk? If I buy the pre-made 500ml cartons do they allow this on or will I have to take scissors (!) to open the carton and taste it? Never travelled before with baby so am v.confused! Thank you!

By the way - I should add that I live in Belgium where ready made cartons not available (unless I buy in UK and import) so I can't buy them after security gate!

we had to taste 50% of all the premade milk we took through airport security when we travelled from UK to Turkey in the summer. I had 4 bottles of milk with me and had to taste 2.

you could just take the powder through and get water airside though.

I've had to throw away cut open milk cartons before (long haul flight, so I had 4 with me) as I only had 2 bottles to empty them in. Made for a really long and difficult flight as I didn't have time to go and shop for more!

What I did after that is to take formula powder and just mix it with normal water when needed on the journey. I know this is against guidelines, but I reckoned it's once-offs. I guess you could ask for a bit of boiling water in the bottle on the plane - I can't imagine that any airline would refuse to provide that.

You can take powder and the crew will give you water

Having thought about this over night, I realise it is irresponsible of me to say you could just mix formula with cold water - due to the risk of bacteria which could be potentially dangerous. (I do it sometimes, but that doesn't make it right so I shouldn't have said.)

I suggest taking one bottle full of already mixed formula with to take with you in case you need milk before you're on the plane, and once on the plane take Eldon's advice.

Go through security and buy the pre mixed cartons on the other side - will be no problem then on the plane.

On the way home - need to check the rules at that airport before you go if poss. You may be able to take the cartons through security and/or buy if you are very lucky, if not ask the staff on the plane for hot water to make up the formula from powder on board.

she cant get the premixed cartons where she is.

Honestly OP, just take the powder premeasured. No cafe or resturant is going to deny you some hot water to make your bottles up with.

To make them instantly drinkable, dissolve the powder in hot water then top the bottle up with cold water. Should come up at perfect drinking temp.
