Where shall I stay in Amsterdam with a 10yo?

I want a room with ensuite for two nights in April, bed only.

Ideally it would be in central Amsterdam, as near the canals as possible, but not in the Red Light District.

And also cheap!

Any suggestions?

How cheap?

We always stay at the American Hotel but DH is dutch and BiL still lives in Amsterdam so I can ask for recommendations if you give me a budget?

Thanks!

I've just found Hotel van Onna's website. Location and atmosphere are perfect, I think, and budget is good, too. But a couple of the reviews I've read so far have mentioned problems with late arrivals, being locked out etc, which I don't want to risk. Anything along those lines: very central but not RLD, preferably on a canal, preferably under ?250 total for the two nights for the two of us. I had thought to stay in a hostel, but can't find anything comparable to British YHA (private non-dorm rooms, with an ensuite) that isn't in the RLD or too far out of the centre. Or does it matter if we're outside the very centre of Amsterdam?

Any recommendations of things to do? Is it possible to cycle along a polder/visit a windmill/see tulip fields in bloom without using up a whole day on one excursion? I definitely want to visit Anne Frank's House, and perhaps see diamond-cutting.

If you are going early April check out the late rooms website as many hotels are already discounting as Easter is so late. We booked hotel rooms in Amsterdam 4 weeks ago at less than half the normal rack rate.
