Going to Orlando in October and will be doing the usual parks/shopping etc.

Would also like to venture a bit further afield as we'll have a car. Any suggestions for places to visit?

Head for the Space Coast. The Kennedy Space Centre itself is well worth a visit and Cocoa Beach is nearby.

we went to gator land which was quite good!

Cocoa beach is very nice. When we went there last October there was an airshow which was really good

Space centre is really good.

We didn't really like the coast abd beaches near there though.

I'd recommend a couple of nights on Sanibel Island or in the Florida Keys. We didn't think the Kennedy Space Centre was that great. We did go on a launch day though so it was very busy. Even geeky DH was disappointed.

will have a look at the Space Coast, thanks. Will have to give Gatorland a miss though!

The Kennedy Space Centre was fantastic (surprised by chop chop) - I'm no space geek but found it very interesting. How can you not be impressed by seeing the launch pads, hearing about (and seeing) the Vehicle Assembly building where they build the rockets, and seeing a real V5 suspended from the ceiling where you eat lunch. I also totally loved the IMAX movie showing hubble telescope footage - fascinating and accessible to even the none scientifically minded (like me and the kids!). It's also located in a nature reserve (Merrit Island) and we saw alligators, dolphins in Banana Creek, gophers, Bald Eagles etc whilst there.

We went to Disney for the week and visited KSC at the weekend when the Disney Parks were busy and tbh it was the highpoint of my holiday

I agree hmc - we loved the space centre too. Have been there on each of our three visits and last time chose it over going to Sea World as enjoyed it more. Going to Orlando again in July and will head over again.

Busch Gardens nr Tampa is great, as is Kennedy Space Center.

Kennedy Space centre and Cocoa beach is good but the best place we found was Anna Maria Island which is south of Tampa. It's 'small town America on sea' No high rise or chain restaurants. Just fab beaches and
there's a free shuttle bus around the island.

Make sure you go to the Ellenton Outlet Mall nearby.

theladylovescupcakes · 23/02/2011 08:30

2old will check out Anna Maria Island, sounds lovely! thanks for all your suggestions everyone

We went to Clearwater beach, it was lovely.
There's also snorkelling with manatees, somewhere that I can't remember!
