Hi

We have a Garmin Nuvi 350.We are looking into sat nav for the US and have many questions...

  • having read around we think hiring a car with GPS isn't the best thing to do but
  • has anyone had experienec of buying the maps for US for a current Sat Nav?
  • is it best to buy a download, a SD card or a DVD?
  • where is best to buy from? Amazon? eBay? Garmin? Play?

Thank you

I always hire a car with satnav - normally Hertz neverlost, or National. I think unless you went a lot, the cost of buying new maps would be more than hiring.

Thanks

I ahve looked for info about this on Trip advisor and Neverlost doesn't get many recommendations, being referred to as AlwaysLost.

Has it always been OK for you?

I've been using it for nearly 11 years now, at one point was in the US two weeks a month - so have used it an awful lot.

Virtually always driving on my own, with no map or idea where I'm going, and have never got seriously lost. Occasionally I take the wrong turning if they are close together, but thats it.

That is good to hear, thanks.

Will look into how much a car with it would cost.

Hi, try this site as they specialise in USA car hire, I'm sure you can add on sat nav as an added extra as well: www.carhireplanet.com

Cheers

We hire a Sat Nav from the car rental place when we get to the States (have used a variety) - seems fine, has served us well, and wasn't too expensive. I wouldn't complicate things

Have the same sat nav, bought the US version on SD card from Amazon @ £30 took it with us with our sat nav, much cheaper than renting a car with a sat nav and at least you know it will work, unlike some we have hired.
