As close to the ferry as possible, but also as nice as possible...

Thanks :)

p and v in [[http://www.pv-holidays.com/gb-en/holidays-picardy_ge Le Touquet or Picardy(Belle Dune). Nice beaches, within an easy hour or so of Calais/Boulogne

thanks LIZS it looks lovely :
I should have said though, this is for April, and we are coming from Sydney...so beaches not a high priority.

The cherbourg peninsula is lovely in April, you can get a ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg and then everywhere is within an hour's drive.

We go to Barneville Carteret a lot with my parents.

Take a look at www.gitesandantiques.com - really family friendly gites around 4 hours drive from coast. There's a review on here too and on Trip Advisor.

If not Belle Dune - which I agree is lovely -and you wanted to camp/caravan, there's a a delightful eurocamp/keycamp place near St Valery at the mouth of the Somme. Set in an estate, near local v nice French town with outstanding food both there and in the other side of the town. In the summer the camp organises excursions to Paris. It has pools and lots of space to run around. And it takes about 2 hours from Calais or less. Northern France's weather won't be entirely reliable, though.
