Not sleeeping in the travel cot

I have a 4 month old baby boy who is a very good sleeper (touch wood). By that I mean he sleeps thru the night 7-7 with a dream feed at 10.30.
On the two occasions that he has slept in his travel cot he has woken up at various points thru the night and now I have the fear of putting him in it.
My theory is that the cot is too big and that he is 'lost' inside it, can't feel the edges at any point. So this wakes him. It is a NScessity cot and not a huge square one.
Clearly I don't want to start putting towels or cushions down the sides but I want him to feel safe in his travel cot.
Any thoughts or advice? The only advice I have is from my mother who says that I shouldn't go anywhere! This is not helpful!
Thanks
