Anyone had a good holiday in an 'unusual' destination?

We're doing the usual New Year deliberation of where to go this summer and I remembered someone saying what a fab time they had in Germany one year.

We have always loved Stockholm but have 'done' it for the time being.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a country or a location that one doesn't necessarily associate as being a great holiday destination?

Cheapish, short haul, good food, interesting (and suitable for young children)...

in the mountains of Greece there is a wonderful hotel. It is in the middle of nowhere and a true delight

Saltzberg is amazing too

Zakopane was GREAT and fun!

Georgia (in the USA) was fab. Especially Savannah. So atmospheric.

The Barrier Islands (especially Jekyll Island) were great and would be good for kids.

Oh I loved Zakopane!

Not so sure if the food could be called "great" though. Mountains - gorgeous. Salt mines - fantastic. Kracow - beautiful. Auschwitz as a day trip - well it is an experience not to forget, but maybe not something for the littlies.

We walked a lot. Scenery is beautiful. And it is very cheap.

I was 5 months pregnant with an adversion to the smell of smoked foods - LOL!

Maybe not the best place for little ones actualy, but not out of the question either. It's very outdoorsy and safe!

Slovenia has been on my hit list for a few years, hopefully we'll make it this year.

Pierogi and Plum brandy! Yum!

Croatia is fab. Not unusual, perhaps, but not full of British tourists either. Montenegro also has a beautiful coastline. You can get cheap flights to split or Dubrovnik and there's an excellent Coastal ferry service to travel around on. You can load your car on and cut out lots of long drives whilstvenjoying sun and scenery. Jadrolinja or something.

Thanks for your replies.

We've spent a few weeks in Georgia but didn't make it to Savannah (which was disappointing) or Jekyll island (I've never heard of it!) - but were restricted to day trips around Atlanta Hmm

I thought Croatia was quite touristy now so good to hear otherwise. I have been before (and loved it) but when it was still Yugoslavia (and without children!).

I know nothing about Slovenia so I shall check that out.

I have to say you haven't won me over by the description of Zakopane! Food is a must really as it's the only time we eat out and the two younger ones might not be up for the walking/pushing. I don't think I could face Auschwitz either. Maybe it's one for teenagers...

I shall ponder some more.

Bulgaria. But not the coast as I am told that it is now horrible and touristy. The mountains are beautiful though.
