toddler in a taxi

I'm not sure where to post this and sure it's an oft asked question, but can't find it in search.

My car is currently off road and I need to get myself to work and ds aged 3.0 to nursery. A taxi is my only option. There's no black cabs round here, just normal car taxis.

Am I allowed to take ds in the taxi without a child seat? It's only 5 miles, but I'm worried about it.

Thanks

If you are worried it might be worth ringing round a few cab firms, they often have a seat they can provide if you book and ask in advance, at least they do round here!

Most taxi companies will provide a car seat if you phone them in advance.
