Austria for summer hols?

We've visited Florida a couple of times and enjoyed All-Inc hols but really fancy something completely different this summer. I've been looking at the Thomson website and wondered if any of you have tried a summer hols in Austria? The hotels all have pools etc - is the weather reasonably dry / warm during August? Salzberg is obviously on our 'must see' list; any other suggestions?

Many thanks.

I remember a wonderful holiday in Austria ans Switzerland as a child. Warm sunny weather, Alpine meadows, lovely B&Bs with gorgeous comfy beds.

Definately recommend it.

Can't give you any travel or accommodation advice. Soz Blush

We have stayed near Salzburg on the Wolfgangsee for the past three Augusts and the weather has always been hot and sunny. Fantastic watersports, swimming in the lake and stunning scenery. Unbeatable.

Hi there, we have an apartment an hour from Salzburg which we use mainly for the skiing. However, last summer we were there for the last week of August and first week of September. We had warm weather for a couple of days, lovely around the pool, then we had rain for 4 days which got heavier every day. This then turned into snow and we ended up wearing our ski gear to walk to our nearest mountain restaurant. Luckily for us we had all the gear but for other holiday makers they had to go and buy wet weather/winter clothes. It is so beautiful in Austria it takes your breath away but you have to be prepared for all kinds of weather and embrace it. Salzburg itself is stunning and two days is just enough to see this beautiful city, Zell-am-zee is also a must with a walk or cycle around the lake. The Grand Hotel overlooks the lake and it's the perfect place for tea and scones with an outdoor sitting area right on the edge of the lake. If the sun is shining you can't beat it. I hope you enjoy Austria.

Our best holidays ever have been in Austria. We went with Kinder Hotels and loved it. Lakes and mountains make the most amazing settings for a holiday.

All booked!!! We're staying in St Johann for 11 nights in August. Hotel has fab reviews on Trip Advisor and we've also pre-booked various trips and excursions eg. river rafting, a high ropes course, Salzburg etc. Yay!!!

Are you staying at Hotel Alpina in St Johann (a Kinderhotel)? We've stayed there and had a fab time a couple of summers ago.

Beautiful area - lots of outdoorsy things so do.

Another fan of the Alps in the summer - we've stayed at a couple of Kinder hotels and found both the kids activities as well as the facilities for adults (spa, pool, food etc) was great. Much better value than most resorts on the Med too.

I didn't expect any more replies - how lovely!! BBB, we're staying at the Hotel Fischer in St Johann. Thanks, AS, we thought that it looked good value and it's reassuring to know that you've found it so, too. Roll on August!!

another fan of austria here!! we went a bit east of where you are going for our summer holidays in August 2009 - we had a fantastic holiday - it was 25 degrees the whole week!

The mountains are also so beautiful in the summer and we had the best time walking & eating/drinking then walking some more! my dc3 was just 3 at the time and even he loved the walking!

Hope you have a fab time!
