Help, any thoughts on who to fly with?

Cheapest come up as
American, United, Lufthansa.

Any thoughts on the above? travelling with DH and 2 DC's.

Or pay the extra for BA? (strikes???)

Air New Zealand are good

(unhelpful)

Prinnie · 21/11/2010 12:32

I've always found Virgin excellent - I would always choose them over BA!

myboys

Cheap is not always cheerful however. Both
American and United are not all that great TBH either with adults or children!.

VA have hard seats particularly in economy class and if you are very tall there is hardly any room in terms of seat pitch. Their standard of service also, whilst once innovative, is now a victim of cost cutting across that airline.

I would certainly price compare both BA and Virgin before booking because there will certainly be a difference in fare cost. I would use a British based carrier for your flight into LAX anyway over an American based one. Unite are still in talks with BA and there is no strike action currently planned.

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty easy when it comes to flying, can sleep anywhere so not worried about uncomfortable seats.
Have flown with Virgin to Oz, and not impressed with the service plus Child seat was a nightmare and complete waste of time.

Might just see what ticket fits our time best and will probably avoid BA just because I don't want to get caught up in strikes. DH's first holiday in years and we don't want it cancelled before it even begins.

As previously mentioned UNITE are still in talks with BA and there is no strike action planned. Also some of the sticking points have now been resolved.

When are you thinking of travelling?.

BatsInTheSnowglobe · 22/11/2010 20:10

I always opt for Virgin over others and they aren't usually anymore expensive than BA.
I went to LAX last year and found that it cheaper to have a stop over in NYC (we decided to stay for a couple of nights each way) it saved us hundreds of pounds each! (which we then spent on the stay in NYC!)

Hulababy · 22/11/2010 20:14

I like Virgin. Have used them a few times now and they have alwas been great. The best flights seem to be the ones that leave from Heathrow. Have used them with DD with us and been very happy with their dealings with children.

I wouldn't trust BA these days so would rule them out before I even started TBH.

Kiwinyc · 26/11/2010 18:51

you will only get different opinions based on different experiences.

Mine are: NEVER Virgin, especially if you are travelling with a baby, they're utter, utter CRAP.

Air New Zealand - have a fantastic entertainment system that really helps pass the time - and I do London-NZ once or twice a yr on ANZ. Food in economy is not the greatest however...

BA - very good if you have children, very accomodating and understand your needs, and have the best bassinet on offer if you have a baby

American used to a have a good seat pitch but changed that several yrs ago

Any of the other airlines - only if you can't get onto Air New Zealand.

Ewe · 26/11/2010 19:01

I used to love Virgin but think over last couple of years they've got worse. Flew with them last week and two flights were cancelled from London so there were no planes to fly back, reason why?

It was cheaper to cancel flights and buy passengers flights with other airlines than actually fly their own plane! And it was utter carnage. I flew back Delta in the end who I was actually pretty impressed with.

I would fly American over Lufthansa, haven't flown United so can't really comment.

LadyBiscuit · 26/11/2010 19:02

I would never fly BA again, United are awful and of those options I would fly Lufthansa

AttilaTheMeerkat · 27/11/2010 12:59

BA are not bad and their flights more often than not go on time. United are indeed awful - cheap is not always cheerful.

mrsgordonfreeman · 27/11/2010 13:02

Virgin, I've flown with a baby and they were great, could not have been more helpful.

ullainga · 14/12/2010 13:29

United is indeed awful, so is American, even in business. If I can, I fly Lufthansa, have always had excellent service and they are very efficient managing connections and delays too.

LAlady · 14/12/2010 17:51

Air New Zealand are the best to LA. Would totally recommend them, especially if flying with children. Otherwise we always fly BA to LA.

Never would I fly with Virgin again - flew with them to Barbados with a toddler and a 5 year old - never experienced such unhelpfulness unlike BA who can't do enough for you.
