Looking to go to NY state next summer for a few weeks. We'd like to go to NY city, Niagara Falls and to stay with relatives near Albany in upstate NY. Any one have any advice? We were thinking of flying to Toronto, then seeing Niagra, then Albany and ending up in NYC and flying home. Is it possible to fly in to Toronto and out from NY? We'd then probably get trains and rent a car.

Or we could do a round trip from NYC driving.

Yes, you can get an 'open jaw' ticket that lets you go overland from Canada to NYC or vice versa. That would be preferable to a round trip from NYC driving, but you should compare prices on the tickets as an open jaw ticket may well be more expensive.
