NewYork & those bedbugs

Keep reading how bedbugs are affecting most hotels in NewYork, not keen to go really but the family want to. Don't fancy staying in an infected hotel room, has anyone had experience of this problem and is it as bad as the papers are making out?

I think it is a big problem, you could check this registry before booking a hotel. I'm planning to go over the holidays and it makes me a bit nervous.

Take a steam cleaner with you?

My brother has an apartment in Brooklyn that he rents out that is far more economical for a family to stay in than a hotel and doesn't have bedbugs. If you are interested, CAT me and I will pass on his contact information.

I didn't know about the bed bug problem.

I'm sure I read somewhere about a really good way to avoid getting bed bugs and bringing them home with you, which is the worst thing - they hop in your suitcase etc and then you have them at home, too. Unfortunately I can't remember where I read it.

There must be a way to kill any stowaways before taking your stuff into your house - maybe leave the entire suitcase in the garage or something, till every item has been washed?

I was in New York from 11-16 Oct in a normal tourist (ie cHeap) hotel and we didn't have any. Never heard anyone else mention them while we were there. Had a fab time and want to go back SOON!!

Saw this article recently about how to check your hotel room for bed bugs. At least hotels seem to be proactive about managing the problem.
