Toddlers and cars, in America!

Can anyone advise me please? (I did a search to see if this has already been covered before, but couldn't find anything).

We're off to the States in a week with our toddler, spending a few weeks in NYC and DC.

Do the Americans have a similar rule to the UK in that children can travel short taxi rides or emergency journeys without a carseat?

We can't really takes ours as it weighs a ton, and will try to take as few taxis (if any) as possible, but I needed to know what our options are.

Any advice on US carseat law, custom for tourists, especially in New York?

TIA

You wouldn't be able to use your carseat in the US anyway as they have completely different safety standards.

Laws vary by state - this is a useful guideline sort of thing, but you'll find more by googling "car seat laws new york".

I'd imagine if it's mandatory to use carseats in taxis though that they would have a few if you booked the cab in advance?
