Petrol buying in a panic

poppy101 · 12/09/2005 20:58

My dh just got back from trying to get to the local supermarket, couldnt get anywhere near as people in my area are panicking and are queueing for miles to buy petrol. Making all the roads near the major supermarkets jammed pack, he turned around and came back.

Spoke to a local bobby on patrol and he mentioned that it has been like this all day where we are. Is it the same everywhere else ??

yes

Merlin · 12/09/2005 21:00

where exactly?

poppy101 · 12/09/2005 21:00

How bad is it, we need to fill up, only suggestion I made up was go out in the early hours, but probably everyone else is thinking this way too ?

am in dorset - haven't noticed any queuing yet, but if I'm passing a station tomorrow with no queue I shall top up.

thedogmother · 12/09/2005 21:04

yep, pretty bad here in the Warrington area. DH came back from work in Liverpool and has been trying to find petrol on his way home without success, and has traipsed round town, wasting more fuel on the way of course. But he has a 40 mile round trip every day so he needs it. My car has got about 3/4 tank left which would last me a good 2 weeks, but if he decides he needs to take it, he'll use it up in 3 days. (and it means I'll have to bike it to work, which isn't so great in a trouser suit, although fantastic for the environment!).

poppy101 · 12/09/2005 21:06

My dh is a teacher and commutes about 50 miles a day round trip so he will have to fill up, I'm okay, as I am a SAHM and walk everywhere, just concerned about how bad it will get, I remember last time.

SE London the same = our garage ran out this morning.

Am smug bear cos DH works at a tank terminal and got wind of this early last week and we're full! (I did share this news with MNers too!)

Essential journeys only in the car though which is pretty much how we use it anyway.

i needed to get petrol today anyways as almost completely empty, the red light had gone on yesterday. so went to tesco's about 2;15. took me 25 minutes to get a tank, AND it cost me £53. a year ago it only cost me 43 and a few months before that less than 40.
i had only intenede to buy a tenners worth, as that was all the cash i had, but seeing the queue, thought i better fill up. dh has a round trip of 150 miles, which is why he stays over two nights a week. and i bet the idiot hasnt got any, and isnt going to get any, so will end up using my car.

Nevada · 12/09/2005 21:08

Thanks KBear - filled my car up yesterday and dh's today with no problems.

LilacLotus · 12/09/2005 21:10

btw, thank you kbear, we filled up at the weekend because you said that. there was a big wait at tesco then, but mostly as the petrol was 91.9p (and it still was this morning)

swedishmum · 12/09/2005 22:51

I didn't realise there was a problem until I joined the queue today - from the pump I could see "Panic at the Pumps" headlines. Me with my gas-guzzling people carrier and 0 miles showing on distance till empty! We live in the middle of nowhere and have to use the car for school runs/bus stop runs etc - I can get through most of a tank without really going anywhere except up and down the local hill!

jampots · 12/09/2005 22:55

petrol at my local Shell is 91.9p but literally a mile down the road at Esso its 96.4p

Queues all at the main road petrol stations but I managed to get over half a tank at a little local Jet station. We use lpg so hopefully will be ok for a while - just thought i would get petrol too just in case we run out of lpg

Skribble · 12/09/2005 22:59

They blocked the all main roads into our nearby town today with the queues, Tescos was the worst.
I,m lucky hospital is close to visit DH and working localy the next couple of days but under half so I will have to fill up soon.

handlemecarefully · 12/09/2005 23:30

I got a full tank yesterday so don't need to bother for a while, but oh shit at the supermarket congestion. I really need some ruddy groceries and don't want to be caught in a petrol station queue.....

Skribble · 12/09/2005 23:35

Just occured to me when I said i work locally, that is my local Tesco LOL, never even occured to me . Oh well I wonder when i will get in I have to drop the kids off first. If its bad i might park in a nearby street and walk.

sparklymieow · 12/09/2005 23:38

I put £20 in my car earlier, it was packed then at 9am. I'm in herts, and one of DH's friends came round at 2pm and said that all the stations are out of petrol.

spacecadet · 12/09/2005 23:42

its 99.9p round here, everyone is panic buying.

Skribble · 12/09/2005 23:43

Oh well maybe if they are out of petrol I can get to work, I usually arrive about 9:15am.

hi5 · 12/09/2005 23:47

Our Tesco's has run out allegedly - garage gossip!
Just used a full tank from the Higlands to Lancs - well some left, hope its sorted for Saturday or big family do in Wales is out!

Skribble · 12/09/2005 23:56

Is there the same panic for diesel? Its got to go a bit of a trip tomorrow and running low.

DelGirl · 13/09/2005 00:42

i'm hoping i'll be able to fill up tomorrow cos i've got to drive about 300 miles on weds/thurs

Skribble · 13/09/2005 00:49

I've got to orgainse DH's work van tomorrow, but i can't even find fuel card. I will just have to wait and see what its like tomorrow.

munz · 13/09/2005 07:35

our stations seem to be ok, no queues or anything - so everyone come to west wales! (althou i've noticed they've put the 2p the took off during the week back on) got to fill up tonight or tomorrow - luckily work's paying for it as i'm off on a trip otherwise I wouldn't be filling it up myself.
