We are going skiing for the first time as a family next year. Where and when is it besy to buy skiwear for a three and five year old?

Probably a bit early yet, around end October / November is best) but Next (already on their webiste), H and M, Argos Additions (C and A) and Asda did some last year plus it is worth keeping an eye on Tchibo, who did really cheap all in ones last year, and Decathlon if one is near you. If you fancy splashing out Snow and Rock do really nice stuff (worth checking their website now for any lasty season bargains) and Gap too. Whatever you buy do make sure it is fully waterproof and warm especially if you are going early in the season, and don't forget good quality boots and gloves as cold and wet toes and fingers make everyone miserable.

I got some good stuff half price in TK Maxx. The only thing is you can't be that fussy about colour.

Got a good Trespass double jacket (ie a fleece zipped inside a waterproof jacket - so effectively you get three-in-one) for £17.99 (dwon from £34.99) in a grey and blue combination (bought last summer), plus (not long before we went skiing in January this year) some black salopettes, again I think near enough half price. They're really good quality too - and should last him another year.

Ds was 5 on Saturday.

We bought the gloves out there - there was a much better choice in the resort (we were in Meribel).

I live in Austria and ds is just 3. I would also give a vote for H&M plus also keep an eye out on www.tchibo.co.uk. They sell excellent snowsuits each year but stock changes each week (and is seasonal), they have only just done rain gear so you may have to wait a few weeks for the ski kit, however it is cheap but good. Also look at www.raindrops.co.uk.

TKMAX is great if you can get your sizes, Iv'e got black sallopettes for working outside in winter.

Last year in Scandinavia ours were kitted out in H and M (also great for baby) plus a few bits from Tog 24 at our local outlet centre. Reminds me, must put stuff on Ebay. Nothing for 3 or 5 years though, sorry.

Boys or girls or one of each?
I have a couple of suits which I was going to put up for sale - may be a bit too big for yours though.I'll look.

jaspercat · 13/09/2005 10:01

Boy will be three when go skiing, but he is quite tall, daughter will be five, and she is quite small.
Thanks for all top tips - it's the first time I've asked a question on Mumsnet.

Oooh - came on to ask almost same question !!! We are off skiing for the first time too this December ! I've been watching e-bay like a hawk - my dd (5 and averagely sized) wants a pink suit (pref salopettes and jacket) - but so far drawn a blank !

If anyone has anything like that that they would like to sell please let me know !

Scatterbrain · 13/09/2005 10:14

By the way Jaspercat - have seen loads of great boys suits on e-bay - really smart all in ones - but nothing I could persuade dd to wear sadly !

Scatterbrain · 13/09/2005 10:34

Jaspercat - have just had another look on e-bay and there are about 6 really smart suits for boys - age 5/6 which you should have a look at - just put "ski 5" in for the search and you'll see them in amongst all the size 5 ski boots ! Still nothing for girls sadly !

jaspercat · 13/09/2005 10:37

Just bid for something, so hopefully that will be one of them sorted!

Just had a brochure through the post today for Ski Warehouse who have ranges for all sizes including toddlers and brands such as Columbia.

LIZS · 23/09/2005 18:17

For those of you taking small kids to the snow this winter Tchibo are doing their bargain snow suits next week here

LIZS · 24/09/2005 18:52

plus h and m in Bluewater had some kids ski stuff today , including pink salopettes for scatterbrain's dd !! No actual ski suits yet, just jackets and salopettes/trousers.

LIZS · 19/10/2005 11:51

Tchibo have adults and kids ski wear on their site today, and stuff like goggles and snow boots. Also Little Trekkers have some items in odd sizes reduced.

LIZS · 08/11/2005 13:11

if you are quick Lidl have ski stuff this week- not much in our branch though

scarymamma · 02/01/2006 10:48

Hi, we're taking our ds & dd skiing for 1st time too. I spent hours searching the net and ebay for stuff and found 2 reasonably priced websites - outdoorgear4u and surlapiste. Didn't use them as got all our stuff from TKMax in the end. Got 2 kids skisuits for £19 each!!!! Cheap as ebay and brand new with no exhorbitant postage to pay!! TKMax also had cheap goggles and gloves.
