Who is better for a transatlantic flight?

I've never flown with either

When are you flying??

BA has not managed to sort out its issues with striking staff - we have booked our December flights to SA with them and are hoping against hope that they come to some amicable arrangement.

Virgin is a bit like Marmite - when they are good they are good, but I have had really shoddy service and a very cramped and miserable flight ...

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/10/2010 17:31

Personally I would always choose Virgin. We have only ever had good experiences with them. Their entertainment equipment is usually more up-to-date than BA's and their staff are generally more relaxed and friendly - and they're great if you're travelling with children.

ConnorTraceptive · 11/10/2010 17:31

Yes I did wonder about the strikes. Not got a definate date to fly sometime between now and december.

I've looked at American Airlines and Delta but reviews don't seem to come up too good for them either

My sister and parents do the transatlantic flight a lot and would choose Virgin every time. (And that was even before the strikes). Agree they are not faultless either though.

I loved Virgin.

scurryfunge · 11/10/2010 17:33

Virgin every time.

BA are shoddy and no one can guarantee no strike activity. They deserve to go bust.

ConnorTraceptive · 11/10/2010 17:33

OK so deffo not BA then!

I wouldn't go Delta or American myself (but have only done internal US flights with them not transatlantic, maybe they have less rude staff on those flights Grin)

ajandjjmum · 11/10/2010 17:41

Virgin

stretchedtothelimit · 11/10/2010 17:49

We flew with BA this summer and they were great, the staff were all very friendly and great with DS but I haven't flown Virgin so can't compare with them.
and have to agree with BecauseImWorthIt their entertainment isn't as up to date as some other airlines

mumto2andnomore · 11/10/2010 18:14

We flew BA this year and they were great,on another forum I read lots of people have had problems with virgin overbooking flights and having big delays.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/10/2010 18:47

Where do you want to fly into?. BA do more routes overall.

Would price compare both airlines before booking as these fares can vary by quite a bit.

Would never use any American carrier to fly transatlantic.

BA's website is far more user friendly than VA's. BA though are not without their issues; apart from their argument with Unite they charge to prebook a seat unless you check in 24 hours before departure.

VA have cut costs across the board over recent years and it shows in the decline of their overall product. Other airlines have caught up and have in some cases superceded them. Its a great shame but I would think twice before using VA these days as their marketing does not always live up to the hype.

ConnorTraceptive · 11/10/2010 19:01

Attila we are likely to fly into any of New York's airports.

I must admit I loathe flying so don't to make the experience anymore stressfull by choosing a shite airline!

OP posts:
AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/10/2010 19:22

Would suggest you do not fly into JFK. Newark is a bit better.

ConnorTraceptive · 11/10/2010 19:51

Thanks that's helpfull to know

i darnt book BA because of strikes, flew virgin years go and they wee fab. a mouse ran over my foot on AA!

Drayford · 12/10/2010 00:23

Anything but BA!

midtowner · 12/10/2010 00:27

I fly to and from New York a lot. I much prefer Virgin. Delta and AA are a long way behind. And I never fly BA.

tefal · 12/10/2010 08:44

BA everytime. Terrible flights with Virgin. Everyone will tell you different though.

Where are you going?

mumoverseas · 12/10/2010 17:03

We go to the states a lot and the last few trips had done BA but due to all their silly buggers over strikes we've booked to go Virgin this time. BA is good, and we flew with them in the summer to the UK but that was a flight that had been changed previously because of earlier flights.
Our USA trip later this month is a major military operation with 4 DC in two different countries and 4 different schools so couldn't take the risk with BA this time.

ConnorTraceptive · 12/10/2010 17:05

I definately can't risk a strike by BA so will go virgin

Unless you are going Club/Upper, both are awful, really, just a case of getting there, and being vaguely fed and entertained on the way. It's pretty desperate stuff to be honest. Don't set your expectations very high!! Just see it as a means to an end. Largely, I am driven by convenience of destination airport and the timing of the flight more than anything else.

Virgin are, possibly, marginally less awful.

ConnorTraceptive · 12/10/2010 17:15

I know what you mean AB. I guess aslong as we get there on time and in one piece I shall consider it a success!

Virgin every time
