Hi All looking for a place to stay in Portofino or a close surrounding town near the water, doesn't have to be flash, just suitable for families. Would love to hear if you have a suggestion.

Thx

Portofino is extortionately expensive. Santa Margherita Ligure is on the train line and has boat services to Portofino and the Cinque Terra. We stayed further up the coast in Deiva Marina and used the train/boat to get about. It is absolutely gorgeous round there and the food is wonderful.

We stayed here The owner was great, rooms simple but clean and there's an ice cream parlour downstairs. 5 mins to the station and to the beach. He has some larger apartments on the square now too I see.....

It really is my favourite bit of the world. Bet you can guess where I got my MN name from now...Wink Portofino itself is gorgeous but unless you are loaded I would consider it a day trip. There isn't much to "do". It's an "admire the scenery and have an expensive ice cream" type of place.

Between there and Portovenere the scenery is stunning. The train line makes it easy and cheap to get about. In the summer there are boats up and down the coast as well. The Cinque Terre villages are all worth a visit. Sunset over the sea from Vernazza is one of my favourite memories.
