Carluccios in South Ken - stones throw away...

What sort of food are you after, and what budget?
There's a Garfunkels at Gloucester Road tube (not as dodgy as it sounds!) and a Gourmet Burger Kitchen near South Ken tube - if you join their online newsletter you get send details of discounts, which can be v. good. To be honest I haven't tried either (went to another GBK) but they were where we planned to go when we went to the museums (ended up in Covent Garden instead!). There's also a Tesco Express and a teeny tiny Waitrose at Gloucester Road tube station, so you can pick up picnic stuff there if you'd rather not carry it in.

Are you going in half term? Be ready for the MASSIVE queue, but it does move remarkably quickly considering. There's a picnic area in the basement, right next to a hands-on discovery centre, where the kids can use microscopes etc and handle some of the exhibits, which is good fun, but might have to booked a few hours in advance if it's really busy and has limited spaces..

Have you considered the Science Museum? There was no queue for that when we went in the summer, and DS (7) would have stayed in the play area for the entire day if we'd let him (as opposed to a total of 2.5 hours Blush - he WAS learning stuff about science - Archimedes' Screw, pulleys, magnetism etc, it was just through the medium of lentils, thousands of the buggers!)

Have fun!
