fishfinger jokes to a minimum please! :o

Was thinking of going away with DP for a few days, and he mentioned Iceland. Anyone been or planning to go?

What are the costs like when you get there? Are there any particular places to see?

good/bad experiences?

Planning a trip to Iceland? This thread is a little old and some of the recommendations may be out of date. For a handy round-up of Mumsnetters’ advice on when to go, what to do, where to stay, and how to save a few pennies along the way, take a look at our guide to Iceland holidays. MNHQ.

We went to Reykjavik a few years ago. Is absolutely gorgeous, very clean and beautiful.

We went to the Blue Lagoon (huge outdoor spa that's warm), saw the Geezas and also where the two plates join (see a huge split in the landscape).

We camped, because the only downside, as I remember, is that it is very expensive. I think one glass of wine was equivalent of about £7. We went with friends and camped (one of our friends had stayed there for a summer, as part of his geography degree - gives an idea of the place, so he knew all of the best places to go to).

As I remember at nighttime, it doesn't 'kick off' in terms of drinking until quite late (the locals drink at home, before going out late, because of the price of drinking).

Also, if you go at the right time, can get 23 hours of daylight.

If you're after beautiful scenery, clean air and some sight seeing of natural outdoorsy attractions, you'll love it. Oh, we also went on a boat trip and saw whales, beautiful!

Havent been myself but my brother and his family went this year and absolutley raved about it, it was the most enthusiastic I have ever seen my brother! and I have to say the photos looked stunning (all 250 of them!!!!)it was expensive though

Oh, I'd like to go to Iceland....
Not helpful, is it? Grin

Thanks for replies.

Mm that sounds a bit lovely sheeplikessleep.

Money is a bit worrying though, DP will have to go cold turkey cut out the wine.

Not sure about camping as it will be November!

Very nice, beautiful scenery. But very expensive!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/10/2010 14:12

oh my god - is it dark 24 hours a day or something in winter then?

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 01/10/2010 14:15

I wouldn't go to Iceland in November, no. Unless I lived somewhere hot and fancied a change!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/10/2010 14:16

:o brilliant. Ok I will point out his idiocy the facts to DP and think about spring instead.

What is it specifically that's so expensive? Or just everything?

going to have to start a new thread now about where is a nice place to go in November, where the sun rises and the wine is cheap :o

My Sister went recently, had an amazing time. She said it was just right for a 4 day quick trip, and I'm very tempted to go myself.

I think it's been a bit cheaper recently (with the economy/crash of icelanding banks etc) but it's still not cheap.

She did get a really good deal though, was about £300 for flights and hotel (may not sound like a good deal but a few years ago you couldn't even fly to Iceland for less than that :) )

Francagoestohollywood · 01/10/2010 14:28

In November I'd go to:
Valencia or
Siracusa in Sicily or
Marrakesh

Iceland is a lot cheaper at the moment we were there again in the summer and it was a bargain compared to about 8 years ago when it was eye wateringly expensive. It is a beautiful country but as has been said before - dark in November!
