My equally lovely parents are having DC's for 2/3 nights next February, they have offered us a city break abroad but to be perfectly honest, I would like nice hotel, lovely rooms and food, log fire in a nice sitting room, spa nice but not essential, maybe somwhere close to a historic house/town, not London.

Coobme Abbey is gorgeous hotel with fantastic restaurant, set in wonderful grounds and woodland and rooms to die for

Avisford Park is also lovely down in Sussex by Arundel set in a deer park and golf course with a spa

York? Edinburgh? Lakes? Durham? Chester?

I guess that 5 hours drive would be our limit, child free is possible. Have found some posibilities but just wanted to know if there was anything else out there.

Was just about to ask where you were Blush

How about a break in the mountains?

This hotel is fabulously comfortable and romantic and only an hour from Geneva airport.

Les Sources de Caudalie is a lovely spa and very accessible too - near Bordeaux airport.

Stratford upon Avon has some lovely hotels like Alveston Manor

Danesfield House in Marlowe, Bucks. Not far from Windsor. We spent a weekend there pre-dd - it was truly lovely. Big log fire in the lounge/great spa/beautiful rooms.

Sorry I haven't been back, trying to organise childcare to get to a funeral in France

Thank you for your help, some of those look great and will investigate further.

Second Alveston Manner - v nice.

We stayed at the Balmoral in Harrogate, which was lovely. Doesn't have its own spa but you get free passes to the Academy Spa, about 20 minutes walk away.

Get a cheap flight to Tallinn, and stay in the luxurious but CHEAP (comparatively speaking, for similar hotels elsewhere...) St Petersbourg hotel.

I stayed there recently for one night after a conference and it was MARVELLOUS and I really want to go back and stay in my bath robe in their spa explore the city...
