Getting an Australian passport for baby born in UK

Hello,

I am just trying to work out the details of obtaining an Australian passport for my baby due to be born mid-November in the UK. Both my dh and I are Australian citizens and so the baby will be entitled to an Australian passport. I understand the process is firstly obtaining a certificate of citizenship based on descent and then applying for the passport. However, we are attempting to fly back to Oz at Christmas time and so will be on a very tight time frame. I read somewhere that you could apply for the certificate of citizenship in person from the Australian consulate in London. However, on the website it simply provides a form to be sent in by post. Does anyone have any experience of undertaking this process and the whole time frame for citizenship certificate and passport application?

Thanks!

If you post this exact question on the british expats website you are sure to get an answer. I am just not sure. Sorry

Emmy, I'm not Australian but thought I would share my experience of getting a New Zealand passport for dd2 quickly. The process was exactly as you say - apply for citizenship and then she got a passport. I was able to drop both forms in together but they could only be processed in sequence.

tbh, I would recommend phoning the HC and, if possible when the time comes, go in in person. Any queries or mistakes can be rectified there and then and there won't be any delays. You will also be given the right advice.

My application was processed as urgent (and I paid for this service Grin) and completed within a week. I'm sure on the passport application you write dates of intended travel as well. Just put an earlier day than your actual departure to be sure!
