Hi,

Has anyone been on a family holiday in Mallorca? It is a good family destination? Am looking to go somewhere warm with hubbie, 2 year old and 10 month old as well as with as two sisters. Would be really grateful if you could recommend any villas/self catering apartments or nice places to stay, thanks!

bump.

I too am interested.

Also - if you go in October 10 would you need a heated pool in order to swim?

We recently went to Palma Nova for a week, we stayed in the Roc Portonova

Its in a really quiet area of Palma Nova, beautiful beach opposite the hotel, nice resturants nearby.

The hotel is pretty basic, but clean and the staff are brilliant.

Marineland is a 5min cab ride away and is worth a visit for the sealion and dolphin show, there are a couple of waterparks nearby too.

Mallorca is a lovely island in general, Alcudia is supposed to be really nice too but I haven't been there myself.

Yes, very good for family holiday. I suggest getting away from the area around Palma and heading north to Puerto Pollensa a lovely seaside resort that is touristy but a lot calmer than say, Magaluf, and within short drive or bus road of lots of beautiful and interesting places - mountains, monasteries, beaches, theme parks. Or if you want somewhere a bit more resorty, Alcudia is a short drive away. Mallorca's only a small island so about 1.5 hour drive away.

It is warm in October (around 20-25 degrees) but I think the swimming pools should be heated. And it can be rainy.

If you are reasonably monied and not scared of knuckle-clenching, hairpin bend drives down to the rocky beaches then Soller and Deia in the north west are absolutely stunning (its where the celebs have their villas). Also quite easy to take a day trip to. If you have DCs that are into trains there's a lovely old-school wild west style train service between Soller and Palma. Palma central is lovely too.

OK I am going to stop now before I get too Envy

Sorry - I mean that Puerto Pollensa is only a 1.5 hr drive away from the AIRPORT in Palma - not from Alcudia - that's about 20 mins away IIRC.

I love Cala D'Or. Also lovely little town...we stayed in the Cala Gran all inclusive, which was excellent value, just by the beach and about 2 mins to resort centre.

Another vote for Puerto Pollensa. The Puerto Azul is great -lots for kids and close to beach and town square - very nice for an evening stroll/drink. Not sure how hot it will be in October though. We usually go to the Canaries in Oct for a bit more heat !

Just back from Porto Pollensa this week, it was great, one thing I found was that the pavements aren't quite as buggy-friendly as they were in Cala D'Or (where EVERYWHERE had ramps) but it was very pretty with pine trees and mountains and a nice sea breeze.

The marina in Cala D'Or is nicer than the one in Porto Pollensa IMO if you are after that sort of thing. We stayed at the Melia Cala D'Or hotel with our 2month old a few years ago and it was lovely.

Enjoy, wherever you decide to go!

I loved Hotel Esplendido in Puerto Soller. We went there in October a couple years ago with our DS who was then 7 months. It was a brilliant place for us as was our first holiday with DS.

I recommend it because it's stylish and comfortable, but also caters for families (but isn't a "family" hotel). The breakfasts are amazing. The staff is very accommodating. The spa is very good and the spa girls double as babysitters. There are two pools, one for children (but they are unheated). The views are beautiful. There are a couple suite-type rooms with a small sitting area and that's where we put DS at night.

The port itself is small and (flat for the most part) walkable with nice cafes and restaurants all along the water. There is a tiny bit of beach just in front of the hotel but it's not a beach resort. That was fine by us as we were just looking to relax and wander a bit and not lay on the beach the whole time. There's a sweet little trolley/tram that runs along the port and it will take you to the main town of Soller which is good for an afternoon.

I would go back in a minute!

monkey923 - where did you stay in Peurto Pollensa?

monkey9237 · 28/09/2010 15:14

Sorry for late reply - we stayed in a villa, it was called Villa Molinera, we used a company called VillaPlus. Google them - very nice house, 2 mins walk to the sea/beach/shops/restaurants, lots of living/storage space, own pool, nice reps, cleaners etc.
