Hotels in New York

We are going to New York in three weeks time. Today we got an email telling us that our hotel booking had been cancelled and the the company we used has gone into receivership. (scam) Can anyone suggest hotels and also what do you think is reasonable for a night in a hotel near the centre? We are going for three nights.

there's reasonable and reasonable...

what sort of hotel are you looking for? quiet? lively? designer? independent? what's your budget?

I love the Hudson hotel but it's expensive - we stayed there on our final night as a treat.

We stayed in the Waldorf Towers when we went. I can recommend it highly - Brad Pitt was upstairs - but we had Hilton points and it is not cheap. If you want family rooms, then the Embassy Suites are supposed to be good. If you want romantic....

Im not sure what is reasonable, some of them are so expensive we could have gone on a luxury holiday for one or two weeks. My DH would probably only wants to spend as little as possible £500-£600 but I have nightmares about bed bugs so I know it has to be decent. He did say they were mentioning bed bugs on the radio so today so that is a good thing. There are only the two of us.

Frommers let you search by price/district/recommendation. I'd look there first and then double check with Tripadvisor.
