Hi

We have holiday planned for October and just realized I am pregnant. Confused Seems the travel clinic's advise is not to go although they don't put it directly.

Anyone been there? Any advise? Has anyone taken antimalarial whilst pregnant? What are the risks for the baby?

Thanks,
L.

Wow! Madagascar is awesome, but pretty basic. Are you staying in a resort, or travelling around?

I have been, but wasn't PG, this was a few years ago now...

The malaria they have there is pretty aggressive, so you'll be recommended to take Lariam ('safety during PG not established') or Malarone I think.
This page has a 'pregnancy' section at the bottom, which doesn't sound too encouraging. As far as I know, chloroquine-based medication is virtually useless in Africa as malaria is resistant to it there.

Maybe search on here for malaria or something, see what other people have done?

Yep, malaria and the immunizations you'll need will be the problem - they may be contraindicated in pregnancy. You might want to talk to your doctor about the risks. And be aware that you are a LONG way from anything but basic medical care (probably SA or Nairobi if you need anything serious).

But if you do go - you'll have a fantastic time; it's the most amazing country. You could stay at some of the more 'French' hotels - they are extremely pricey but may be better for comfort/health issues. Having said that I wasn't ill when we went (mix of cheapish places and amazing basic remote rainforest lodge), and I'm always ill on holiday.

Thank you!

I finally decided I am not going. It wasn't an easy one - the temptation is enormous!
